Adidas, in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, have pledged to save our oceans one shoe at a time by upcycling plastic and netting from the world’s oceans and turning them into shoes, clothing and accessories as part of their “Run for the Ocean” initiative.
There is believed to be 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of ocean. It has been calculated that 275 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated in 192 coastal countries each year, with 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons entering the ocean. As a result, each year over 100,000 marine creatures die from plastic entanglement.
Protection and preservation
Since the start of their collaboration in 2015, Adidas and Parley for the Oceans have been working to promote awareness for the protection and preservation of our oceans by producing shoes, clothing and accessories made from up-cycled plastic as they believe it is the responsibility of the creative industries to change the mindset of the consumer.
Adidas have aligned their “Run for the Oceans” initiative to Parley’s three step philosophy – avoiding plastic where possible, intercepting plastic waste and changing how plastic is used. So far, they have had huge success. In 2017, they sold 1 million pairs of Parley trainers – using eleven bottles per pair of trainers, with other recycled materials making up the rest of the shoe. The money raised going towards the “Parley Ocean School” in the Maldives that provides environmental education that aims to empower and educate the next generation of ocean guardians.
This story shows how Adidas supports Goal 14: Life Below Water, specifically Target 14.1: “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”
