Can a drinks business provide healthy food to children all year round?
PepsiCo is on a mission to make healthy food physically and financially accessible to low-income families through sustainable, business-driven solutions. The second-largest food and beverage business in the world established its “Food for Good” initiative in 2009. Using its expertise in taste, nutrition and distribution to tackle child hunger, it has served over 6.5 million meals.
Child hunger is a challenge in many countries, including the United States. In the U.S., one in five children is at risk of hunger, which becomes more prevent during school holidays when children do not have access to school meals. Proper childhood nutrition is essential to positive health outcomes during formative years, where food insecurity may lead to impairment of physical and mental health development.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that at least 23 million Americans live in a “food desert”, that is an area where healthy and nutritious food is difficult to obtain. Only one in five eligible children receive free summer meals and the problem is compounded by inner-city poverty.
Delicious and healthy
The initiative provides meals that follow USDA-established meal pattern guidelines, ensuring a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables. PepsiCo work with local agencies to provide fresh produce and products from high-quality brands. It provides breakfasts, lunches and dinners, in addition to weekend “backpack” bundles.
Thanks to the initiative, more children are able to access safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.
This story shows how PepsiCo supports Goal 2: Zero Hunger, specifically Target 2.1: “By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.”
