Can storage units help the homeless?
Safestore, the UK’s largest provider of self-storage solutions, is working in partnership with Hands on London and Human Appeal to provide donated winter coats to the homeless and most vulnerable members of society.

One in every 200 people in Britain are homeless and sleeping on the streets, or stuck in temporary accommodation. Many of these people desperately need a way to keep warm in winter, but either can’t afford a winter coat, or don’t own one that is waterproof enough to be of use. Safestore’s work with Hands on London and Human Appeal is helping to make those long, cold nights a little more bearable.
A coat is a basic piece of winter clothing that most of us take for granted, yet it’s an essential item that many people are missing. With so many homeless on the streets of the UK, sadly some of the most vulnerable will not have the luxury of wearing a coat during the winter months. Safestore is passionate about supporting the Wrap Up London campaign as it works to provide comfort and warmth to those in need. Whilst the campaign began its operation in London, it has since expanded its efforts to include Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Newport, and Lancashire.
A little goes a long way
Since its launch in 2011, the Wrap Up campaign has collected 103,000 coats. Safestore has supported the campaign by providing storage space in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow to facilitate the sorting, storage, and distribution of the coats to over 100 charities, homeless shelters, vulnerable women and children centres, and refugees. This year, Safestore is continuing its good work by encouraging anyone with an old coat they want to donate, to pop down to their nearest tube station or Safestore location where collections are made during specific campaign dates.
This story shows how Safestore supports Goal 1: No Poverty, specifically Target 1.3: “implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.”
Founded in 1998, Safestore is the UK’s largest, and Europe’s second largest provider of self-storage solutions. Headquartered in Hertfordshire, it has 118 stores nationwide.
