Can the legal industry become more gender diverse?
Thomson Reuters, a mass media and information law firm, are committed to improving gender equality in the legal industry. They have launched a women’s leadership programme to address the issues that females face when trying to reach senior levels in their careers.
Over the years there has been a great increase in the number of females gaining access to the legal industry. However, the profession is still falling short when it comes to gender equality at senior levels. Statistics show that only 33% of women achieve partner status. A figure that is even more stark in the judiciary – 50% of women are called to the Bar, but only 25% of the judiciary is female.
Awareness of Gender Diversity
In 2018, Thomson Reuters decided it was time to tackle the inequalities in the legal industry by supporting women and aiding them on their journeys to the senior levels. The Transforming Women’s Leadership in the Law (TWLL) programme launch was attended by senior industry leaders, both male and female, from all areas of the legal sector. By addressing a wide variety of industry leaders, it enabled Thomson to raise awareness of the issues surrounding gender diversity – something a variety of people in the industry were not fully aware of.
Bringing the Industry Together
The program will allow the participants access to professionals from all areas of the law, it aims to start a conversation where, both males and females, can together share great initiatives. Thomson Reuters believe that by facilitating such a conversation, through events, they will be able to identify steps to remove the barriers many females face when trying to progress. They hope that the result will not only improve the number of female leaders, but they also hope that it will make the workplace more innovative and creative as a result.
This story shows how Thomson Reuters supports Goal 5: Gender Equality, specifically Target 5.5: “Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic and public life.”
