Like the rest of the construction industry, the majority of Laing O’Rourke employees are male. Although mental illnesses affect both men and women, men may be less likely to talk about their feelings and seek help, making its workforce disproportionately at risk of mental health issues. Recognising this, Laing O’Rourke has partnered with mental health charity, Mind, to take practical steps to help its employees.
Men and women experience many of the same mental illnesses, but their willingness to talk about their feelings may be different. Often men are subjected to a culture where the standards of masculinity cause them to hide, finding difficulty in talking openly about the challenges and worries they face. In the high-pressure and physically exhausting environment of the construction site, emotions can seem like a sign of weakness.
In partnership with Mind, Laing O’Rourke provides its employees with a variety of tools to help break down the stigma. Training, fact sheets and opportunities for confidential counselling, in addition to stress management workshops enable conversations about mental health and provide outlets and pathways for those affected to seek help.
Time to change
The Time to Change pledge recognises that with one in four people experiencing a mental health issue in the U.K. every year, businesses must open the conversation and support those who may be experiencing such issues. By normalising it and equipping colleagues to access help, Laing O’Rourke is helping create a healthier, more open and supportive workplace.
This story shows how Laing O’Rourke supports Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, specifically Target 3.4: “By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.”
