Can young people find a voice through sport?

Berkeley Group is a market leader in the property development industry. In 2011, the Berkeley Foundation was set up, and so far, it has committed over £13 million to over 100 charities and worthy causes.

Research from the University of Bath and the Women’s Youth Trust shows that there are 56,000 more young men in education, employment or training than women. This combined with London councils cutting one-third of youth services means that the young people of today, particularly women from minority ethnic backgrounds, are often left feeling isolated and lack confidence.

Changing lives

In partnership with The Change Foundation, Berkeley Group set up a sport for development programme known as ‘Street Elite’ to help young people find their voice. The programme involves nine months of intensive coaching and mentoring for young people aged 18-25. The youngsters receive sports training, they then use their new skills to engage with their community by hosting sports sessions alongside sporting professionals; they further demonstrate their skills on a work placement.

All-round success

This pioneering programme has enabled Berkeley Group to help and support youngsters, by ensuring that they are moving away from crime, gangs and a general feeling of seclusion. Since it was launched in 2012, 402 young adults have graduated from the programme and almost 80% have gone on into further education, training or employment – 15 graduates are now currently employed with the Berkeley Group.

This story shows how Berkeley Group supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.6: “By 2030, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training.”
