How can a clothing company reduce inequality?

H&M is a Swedish, multinational, clothing-retail company known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers, and children. As one of the largest global clothing retailers, it firmly believes that everyone connected to its business should be treated in a fair and equal way.

Our Values from H&M.

Fair & Equal

H&M strongly believes that everyone connected to its global business should be treated in a fair and equal way. For H&M, being 100% Fair & Equal means making sure that its values and respect for human rights are upheld and promoted, both within its company, and across its supply chain. H&M believes that it has a responsibility and an opportunity to drive inclusiveness, and embrace diversity throughout its business, in turn, fostering innovation and making its business more sustainable.

Inclusivity

H&M represents and connects with a large and diverse group of people around the world, and strongly believes every one of those people should be treated equally. To achieve this, the organisation aims to act as a steward for diversity and inclusiveness. Internally, it welcomes, accepts, and celebrates all employees based on individuality, and regardless of differences. Externally, H&M acts as a steward for diversity and inclusiveness by engaging with its customers through global marketing campaigns, and collections that aim to recognise and support everyone’s right to proudly be, and express who they are.

Breaking the norm

In 2017, H&M launched the UNIdenim collection featuring six denim garments made to be worn by all customers, regardless of gender. The collection featured jackets, jeans, and shorts available in a variety of sizes. To further promote diversity and inclusivity, the collection was accompanied by an advertising campaign which featured male and female models wearing exactly the same outfits.

This story shows how H&M supports Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, specifically Target 10.2: “By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.”
