KCOM is one of the UK’s longest-established communications companies, helping customers get connected since 1904. Throughout the decades, they’ve stayed at the forefront of technology and communications. KCOM is committed to encouraging more women to consider careers in engineering.
Surveys indicate that only 11% of the engineering workforce is female. However, engineering is a crucial part of the UK economy, contributing over 25% to our GDP. In addition, encouraging more women to meet their full potential in the engineering field could add significant value to the economy, as companies are 15% more likely to perform better if they are gender diverse. KCOM is committed to encouraging more women engineers to join their workforce.
The future of engineering
Female engineers and IT technicians who are already making their mark at KCOM attended the two-day Women into Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) event to give insights on what it is like working in the tech sector. The event, which was held at Hull Guildhall, was an opportunity for prospective engineers to meet the region’s leading tech sector employers and talk to other women who were already working in the sector about their experiences.
KCOM are working hard towards their goal of introducing more female engineers to their workforce, believing that women are still massively underrepresented in the sector. They are aiming to inspire more women to consider a career in these areas that they may have previously discounted and are actively seeking both men and women applicants for a number of opportunities.
This story shows how KCOM supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.5: “By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value.”
