How can a travel company empower young people?

TUI is supporting Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

TUI, one of the world’s largest travel companies, aims to improve the life chances of over 100,000 children and youth by 2020 through their global TUI Academy programme.

TUI Academy – A better future for Dominican youth from TUI Care Foundation.

Investing in the future

Disadvantaged children and youth living in or around TUI’s holiday destinations and in countries where TUI operates have a right to safe living environments and access to education and job opportunities. To help empower them to reach their full potential, TUI has invested in education and life skills for young people.

10,000

TUI Academy creates new opportunities for disadvantaged youth living in and around holiday destinations by means of professional education and training. TUI’s objective is to empower 10,000 youngsters through vocational training, life skills, teaching work placements and online courses.

Actually, I can.

In partnership with Plan International, the TUI Care Foundation focuses on female empowerment and skills development for youth in local communities and the Dominican Republic. In 2018, the second TUI Academy group provided 60 new students, of which roughly 80% were young women, a training programme in roles such as kitchen assistant and hotel receptionist. New life and vocational skills, plus a three-month internship, help protect the youth from commercial sexual exploitation, as well as kick-off their careers in the tourism sector. From the first group of 45 graduates, 26 entered employment in 2018 in one of TUI’s hotels of the Blue Diamond Resorts or Riu.

Lessons from bamboo

In 2018, the TUI Academy programme was launched together with Plan International in Hue, Vietnam offering disadvantaged youth career opportunities. The project provides 350 young people with vocational training and/or loan support for setting up a business, of which 180 youth have taken part in hospitality training in a social enterprise training restaurant called TRE (bamboo) which opened its doors in July 2018 in Hue city.

This story shows how TUI supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.5: “By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value.”
