How can a travel company make tourism more sustainable?

Thomas Cook is one of the oldest and best-known names in leisure travel, serving more than 19 million customers each year. The organisation is committed to working with customers, employees, and local communities in order to deliver sustainable tourism.

Positive impact

As the world’s oldest tour operator, Thomas Cook recognises more than most the impact tourism can have around the world. Tourism can be a force for good by generating employment for local people, celebrating traditional skills and heritage, and creating awareness of the diverse world in which we live. However, with an ever-growing number of travellers, Thomas Cook also understands the problems tourism can create.

Making A Difference with Every Holiday

Thomas Cook introduced its ‘Making A Difference with Every Holiday’ strategy to make every holiday a little bit more sustainable. It broke this down into three key stages; At Home, The Journey, and On Holiday. ‘At Home’ creates positive change within the communities in which its customers live and work. ‘The Journey’ aims to reduce Thomas Cook’s impact on the environment in the most responsible way possible. Lastly, ‘On Holiday’ strives to collaborate with a variety of partners to deliver quality products and services in a sustainable way.

Scholarships for the future

Anyone who takes a holiday can make a positive difference when they travel. Sustainable tourism isn’t necessarily about specialist holidays, it’s for every person who takes a holiday, and can drastically improve the well-being of destination communities. In Turkey, Thomas Cook has been working with The Travel Foundation to set up a university scholarship in tourism management for young girls from impoverished backgrounds. This scheme seeks to offer a brighter future for the girls, as career opportunities in Turkey are few and far between.

“This story shows how Thomas Cook supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.9: “By 2020, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products.”
