How can circular fashion protect our planet?
ASOS, a British online fashion retailer, is combating climate change by going circular. Their aim is to educate their designers on sustainability by teaching them the life cycle of a product and how to become mindful not just of consumers when constructing their designs but also the environment.
Climate change challenges
Second to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world. Reports from the Environmental Protection Agency, that revealed that 15.1 million tons of textile waste was generated in 2013, of which 12.8 million tons were discarded demonstrates the disastrous amount of wastage and environmental impact the fashion industry is having on our planet.
ASOS has created a dedicated sustainable sourcing team to better integrate sustainability into their retail operations. The team’s primary objective is to support and educate ASOS’ internal teams by providing them with information on how to design, source and innovate to create more sustainable products.
By introducing circular thinking into their business model, ASOS are helping mitigate a variety of the potential consequences that are cause by wasted products. They have validated their commitment by agreeing to have all of their design team trained on circular design techniques and best-practice for packaging by 2020. All of which are build upon their previous commitments to sustainability, such as their launch of Eco Edit in 2010, which is a curated destination within their website where customers can buy pioneering sustainable fashion, beauty and jewellery goods.
