How can gin allow the natural environment to thrive?
Founded by brothers Danny and Pete, the Dyfi Distillery is situated within the UNESCO World Biosphere of Dyfi. This is also where the wildflowers, aromatic leaves, and fruits that flavour its award-winning gins are foraged by hand. As a sustainable business to its core, the organisation works in partnership with a local nature reserve to allow the natural environment to thrive, and increase biodiversity.
The Dyfi Distillery
Inspired by their Eden-like surroundings, The Dyfi Distillery is passionate about producing gin of world-class quality. The Dyfi region is recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. It provides the distillery with a unique flora spectrum to draw upon, as well as a meticulous selection of the finest, classic, gin botanicals. The Dyfi Distillery produces its artisan gin in very small batches, no more than once per week, in order to maintain the balance of this fragile environment.
Dyfi Osprey Project
The Dyfi Distillery has developed a lasting relationship with one of its neighbours in particular, the Dyfi Osprey Project nature reserve. The nature reserve has very low levels of pollution, which makes it the ideal place to harvest a small flowering shrub called Bog Myrtle. However, the reserve needs to control this foliage as part of its land management plan, so the distillery ensures they take a harvest under the Project’s direct supervision, as well as donate to the Project each time they gather ingredients.
With the majority of the botanicals used at the distillery foraged locally, Dyfi has significantly reduced its ‘food miles’. In fact, the distillery has started to replant juniperus communis (common juniper) on farmland owned by one of the directors. The cone of this plant is a requirement of gin production, and fully reinstating this native species in the valley is a long-term goal of the distillery.
This story shows how the Dyfi Distillery supports Goal 15: Life on Land, specifically Target 15.5: “Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.”
