Can pro bono time help those without access to justice?
DLA Piper is a global law firm who along with forty other leading national and international law firms have committed some of their pro bono clinic time to help marginalised and disadvantaged individuals in the U.K. Recent reforms have seen over £350 million cut in legal aid and a 75% reduction in access to representation, causing critical impact on the ability of vulnerable people to access justice.
A growing portion of pro bono time is being spent on supporting access to justice for marginalised and disadvantaged individuals by developing a network of specialised clinic and empowerment programmes. This is in response to “advice deserts” emerging across England and Wales where the provision of free legal advice is disappearing.
Improving educational outcomes
DLA Piper is committed to improving educational outcomes for U.K. children. It has undertaken work to map the causes and manifestations of discrimination against children with disabilities and division strategies to counter them. It also provides direct representation to individuals to help them realise their rights and provides legal support to leading NGOs in the sector.
Every deaf child
Launched last year in association with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS), this clinic provides legal support and representation to families of deaf children to obtain the benefits they are entitled to. The clinic took on 24 cases in its first six months of operation, providing essential help to families who would otherwise be unable to access this help.
This story shows how DLA Piper supports Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, specifically Target 16.3: “Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.”
