How can the beautiful game promote health and wellbeing?
Football is about drive, dedication and most importantly teamwork. Manchester City Football Club are taking these key attributes and are using them to motivate people by teaching them how these life skills can be transferred from the pitch to the wider community.
Food for Thought
A report conducted by the British Medical Association in 2015 highlighted the importance of promoting healthy diets amongst children and young people. They identified the lack of progress following the 2008 analysis by the UK Cabinet Office Strategy Unit which estimated that diet-related disease leads to approximately 70,000 premature deaths in the UK annually and concluded that the only way forward is to promote an environment where it is normal and enjoyable to eat healthily.
The Generation Game
Manchester City’s Health Programmes, developed as part of their City in the Community initiative, are aiming to engage young people and educate them about the importance of health and wellbeing through football. They offer specialised programmes such as “City Cooks” and “City Play” that aim to restore a passion for physical activity and healthy diets for both children and their parents, meaning they can improve their quality of lives whilst spending quality time together – making it a real family affair.
Manchester City dedicates over 13,000 hours to the projects each year and have already worked with over 40,000 people within their community. They have acknowledged the importance of educating both the younger and older generations and have used football as a catalyst for this.
This story shows how Manchester City FC supports Goal 4: Quality Education, specifically Target 4.7: “By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.”
