How can the brightest minds in IT help build the smart cities of the future?

Cisco is helping transform Manchester into a smarter city with the belief that it can make urban living better by pioneering the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This is the intention of CityVerve, a demonstrator project funded by Innovate UK in which Cisco and 21 other partners are creating a replicable commercial model for smart cities everywhere.

Reimagining what a city can be, with endless possibilities

Connecting everything from buildings to public services, smart cities harness big data, network connectivity, sensors and more to make our everyday lives and city living more intelligent. Its applications are endless, from healthcare to the environment, citizen empowerment and security. Smart cities aim to improve the way people experience the city and what it has to offer, opening up new enterprises and enhancing people’s lives.

Brightest minds, enterprising spirit, revolutionary technologies

CityVerve unites incredible expertise to reimagine a smarter, more connected Manchester that places people at its heart, recognising the human experience that brings streets, buildings and busses to life. It is an open platform, meaning that independent systems can be connected. Open calls invite innovators from all walks of life to contribute to projects that meet the needs of Manchester’s citizens.

Cleaner air, smarter waste

Reducing adverse environmental impact is a key part of the project, which has its own pillar: “Energy & Environment”. For example, high-quality air monitoring devices are being used to deliver real-time data at a reasonable cost, helping make decisions involving traffic and transportation. Other projects involve reducing wastewater and improved facilities management.

A single, centralised layer

Cisco’s role in the project is to provide a single, centralised layer which brings together inputs from across the city in a secure, seamless way. It is spearheading the technical innovation across the whole project, playing an important role to demonstrate how technology can revolutionise the lives of citizens and companies in Manchester. It hopes that this will provide a blueprint that may be applied to other smart cities in the U.K. and beyond.

This story shows how Cisco supports Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, specifically target 11.6: “By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.”
