How can transparent cocoa help productivity?
Barry Callebaut, a Swiss supplier of chocolate, is helping combat poverty by making their production processes more sustainable. In collaboration with SAP, a German software company, they are using bean-tracking technology to lift the incomes of some of the world’s poorest farmers.
Essential to livelihoods
Cocoa is an extremely vital crop that; it is the livelihood of 40-50 million people; however, the industry is exceptionally volatile, and warnings have been issued – if trends are to remain. Demand is increasing, but farmers are simply not able to supply enough because they don’t have the means to do so because they are often detached from the supply chain due to lack of transparency.
The impact of technology
In 2016, Barry Callebaut’s partnered with SAP, to introduce a computer app-based system “Katchilè” that will allow their farmers to track their beans via their mobile phones! Their farmers are now able to track their transactions and production inputs, expedite business and eliminate the time-consuming paper-based administration processes.
Having a system that facilitates transparency that can be accessed in the world’s most remote locations will offer cocoa farmers and opportunity. For the very first time they will be able to work independently, with all the information they require to run their business successfully at the touch of a button. Moreover, this will allow for them to improve their productivity and monitor their supply chain.
This story shows how Barry Callebaut supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.2: “Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors.”
