When you buy (PRODUCT)RED™ from Apple, you give a donation to the Global Fund, which finances HIV/AIDS programmes. This contribution helps people affected by HIV in Ghana, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Kenya and Zambia.
A teenager is infected with HIV every two minutes, yet it is preventable. AIDS is the leading cause of death amongst women worldwide, yet it is treatable.
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, our bodies natural defence against illness. If left untreated, a person’s immune system will eventually be broken down completely. AIDS refers to the symptoms that occur at the very final stage of an HIV infection. A single pill a day, costing only $0.30, can stop mothers from passing the virus on to their children.
The power of a purchase
With the purchase of the (PRODUCT)RED™ variant of many Apple products, customers help make a contribution to halting the transmission of HIV and saving lives. During 1-8 December, proceeds from participating In-App purchases of Apps contribute to the fund, as well as $1 for every purchase made using Apple Pay at an Apple. All of these purchases pay for counselling, education and care services.
11 years, $160 million
Over $160 million has been raised to support HIV/AIDS programmes that provide counselling, testing and medicine that prevents the transmission of HIV from a mother to her unborn child. The goal is to deliver an AIDS-free generation, which with the correct prevention and treatment is becoming a reality, thanks to (PRODUCT)RED™ purchases.
This story shows how Apple supports Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, specifically Target 3.3: “By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.”
