How can we reduce smartphone use while driving?
Founded over a century ago, AA is the UK’s most trusted brand providing car insurance, driving lessons, breakdown cover, loans, motoring advice, road maps and more. Through a range of campaigns, the AA is committed to reducing the amount of road traffic accidents due to hand-held phone use whilst driving.
DESIGNATED DRIVER. You’re twice as likely to crash text driving as drink driving from AA.
More than two million car passengers would do nothing if their driver used a hand-held phone whilst driving, according to research for the AA Charitable Trust. Even though the government has increased the penalties for using a mobile at the wheel, the AA Trust believes changing behaviour is just as important. Thus, they launched a hard-hitting campaign to try to change attitudes and behaviours around driver distraction and stop these preventable deaths.
There are constantly at least 50 things competing for our attention, and that doesn’t change when we get behind the wheel. But the more we try to multitask, the more likely we are to have an accident. In fact, you’re twice as likely to crash text driving as you are drink driving; yet most of us wouldn’t dream of driving if we were over the limit. Thus, in the name of saving lives, the AA has lots of helpful tips for reducing distraction and temptation.
Figures from the World Health Organisation show that 3,500 people are killed every day on roads around the world, and road traffic accidents are set to overtake AIDS as the biggest killer of people. As part of FiA’s #3500Lives campaign, supported by the AA, Pharrell Williams, Rafael Nadal and Fernando Alonso are among a host of celebrities who are urging people to take more precautions when they drive, from not texting and driving to always remembering to wear a seat-belt.
This story shows how AA supports Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, specifically Target 3.6: “By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents”
