Reformation, a sustainable clothing brand, is hoping to address water scarcity and water-use inefficiency issues by regulating their production processes. They are aiming to combine their fast-fashion business model with sustainability principles in order to allow their customers to shop without compromising the environment.
Our Water Footprint
Statistics show that on average it takes over 2000 gallons of water to make just one pair of jeans. The effect of using such a large amount of water to create our everyday garments means that 47% of the world’s population will face severe water shortages by 2030. It is therefore evident that now is the time to take more consideration when it comes to taking note of our water footprint.
The Rise of Eco-Fashion
In 2017, Reformation launched their very own range of eco-fashion jeans that are less harmful and more sustainable than the average pair. They use only one-third of the amount of water and cotton to make their jeans in comparison to many other manufactures, which means they are able to save an astounding 1,468 gallons of water per pair!
The Smallest Environmental Impact
Their new and improved production processes mean that they are able to make forward-thinking fast-fashion with the smallest environmental impact. Moreover, they are further supporting this ethos by launching The Wet Program – meaning for every pair of jeans you buy, Reformation will donate 1,000 gallons of credits to the National Forest Foundation’s clean water projects.
This story shows how Reformation supports Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, specifically Target 6.4: “By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.”
Founded in 2009 by Yael Aflalo, a former model, Reformation is a sustainable, vertically-integrated clothing brand based in Los Angeles. Their primary focus is on womenswear however, in 2017 they also launched a children’s, swimwear and petite wear section. They pride themselves on their sustainable practices and their eco-friendly and pro-social attitude.
