Water is essential for life, yet over 884 million people around the world still don’t have access to safe drinking water. Over 2 million people die every year from waterborne diseases and most are children under 5 years old. This needs to change, which is why One is working to help tackle this issue.
The One Foundation
Since One launched (over 13 years ago), the number of people without access to clean water globally has reduced from over 1 billion to 884 million – but there is clearly still work to be done. The One Foundation’s projects take a holistic approach to ending water poverty, which means that, as well as drilling new boreholes, constructing wells and repairing faulty water pumps, they also focus on training communities in the maintenance and repair of their water points and provide education on best practice hygiene.
When you Drink One, The world drinks too!
One Water is recognisable by the butterfly mark in its logo. They use a butterfly because, as chaos theory suggests, they believe that one small action (like changing the brand of bottled water that you buy) can help to cause a real change on the other side of the world.
This story shows how One Water supports Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, specifically Target 6.A: “By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies.”
