What can we do to help women thrive?

Twinings is committed to improving the health of over 46,000 women in its supply chain in Kenya by 2020 in support of Family Planning 2020. Helping improve the quality of lives of people in tea communities where it sources its products, Twinings believes everyone in its supply chain should have a good quality of life, being able to provide for themselves and their families.

Awareness and Access

In order to create healthier, empowered and more sustainable tea communities, Twinings supports programmes that raise women‘s health awareness, as well as those that improve access to health services, particularly concerning reproductive health and family planning. Over 800 women around the world die each day from complications in pregnancy and childbirth which are mostly preventable, making this a priority issue.

Family Planning 2020

To achieve this, Twinings works with Family Planning 2020. Family Planning 2020 (also known as FP2020) is a global partnership that supports the rights of women and girls to decide, freely and for themselves, whether, when and how many children they want to have. Working with governments, civil society, the private sector and academic community, FP2020 is enabling 120 million more women and girls to use contraceptives by 2020, directly supporting the UN Secretary-General‘s Global Strategy for Women‘s, Children‘s and Adolescents‘ Health.

Gender inequality is a major barrier to human development. Women and girls are discriminated against in health, education, public life, decision-making and participation because of their gender. Twinings is committed to empowering women and girls because all of these issues have negative consequences on the health of their children, their family‘s livelihoods and society.

Multiplier Effect

Educating girls has a positive multiplier effect, as educated girls are more likely to marry later and have fewer children, who in turn are more likely to survive, be better nourished and better educated. Educating girls ensures they are protected and able to participate in society productively, fighting poverty and preventing disease. This is how Twinings helps women, and the communities in which they live, thrive.

This story shows how Twinings supports Goal 5: Gender Equality, specifically Target 5.6: “Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences.”
