Why build bridges to help reconnect nature?

With 17.2 million square meters of bio-bridges built in 2016 alone towards its pledge to protect 75 million square meters of land, the Body Shop is raising funds to construct wildlife corridors that help protect endangered creatures and restore rainforests. Bio-bridges restore wildlife corridors within damaged landscapes to help endangered species reconnect, enabling them and local communities to live more sustainably. It is working with several conservation organisations including the Wildlife Conservation Society and the World Land Trust to achieve this.

Reconnecting landscapes

Bio-bridges, also known as wildlife crossings, are essential structures that allow animals to cross human-made barriers safely, allowing species to thrive, protected from human activity. Enabling safe movement is essential to the survival of many animals who otherwise struggle to thrive in fragmented landscapes.

Destruction of the rainforest, caused by illegal logging, for example, damages the rainforest ecosystem, including the habitats of the creatures that live there. Connecting isolated and endangered animals, such as orangutans, tigers and monkeys, as well as plant species allows them to breed and thrive as wildlife can pass safely between deforested and developed regions.

Community involvement

A key part of the initiative involves enabling local communities to maintain the long-term protection of reconnected habitats so that they can develop more sustainable ways of life. This includes working closely with The Body Shop to identify new natural ingredients, which can provide local communities with alternative sources of income beyond logging and poaching. The Body Shop is also making funding available to conservation groups, funds of which are raised through the sale of special edition products.

This story shows how The Body Shop supports Goal 15: Life on Land, specifically target 15.5: “Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.”
